It was such an honor to photograph artist, Randee Hooker, with her stunning artwork that she created in this master bedroom. When the client told her she wanted a large black and white abstract for her master bedroom, Randee created a massive piece full of texture and nuanced color.

I was curious to know more about Randee, her art and her process. Our conversation follows below:

DID YOU STUDY ART IN SCHOOL?

Yes! I received my BFA from Florida Atlantic University with a major in studio art. I studied 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art as well as installation art, contemporary art, and conceptual art. My concentration mostly consists of contemporary art and mixed media.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR RECENT WORK:

I have been painting for over 10 years. My recent work is mostly abstract painting that includes mediums such as acrylic, pen, ink, charcoal, and watercolor. The idea around my new body of work incorporates my thought and emotions from written word. I then use this text and write passages or words directly onto my canvas. This process leaves the text slightly exposed to the viewer creating a sense of curiosity.

WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS LIKE?

My artwork displays expression and movement. I want my paintings to convey emotion; I find that what I am feeling shows through on the canvas. I am usually not sitting still while I’m painting, I tend to move around and listen to high energy music in the studio. When I am not in the studio I like to paint outside, I am more productive in nature. My favorite time of year to paint is in the summer while I’m by the pool.

I always have an idea of what colors I will use before I start painting. To prepare for a painting, I will make swatches of color schemes and desired compositions in my sketchbook before I begin.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE BLACK AND WHITE ABSTRACT ARTWORK YOU CREATED PICTURED ABOVE:

The homeowner expressed she wanted a painting with minimal color and a lot of texture. The painting size she requested was a 60x60” canvas with a floating frame. I made the floating frame in natural pine to compliment the black and white in the painting.  I had to rent a cargo van to transport it to her house because the width of the painting is too large for most SUV’s. My husband and I spent the day driving up to Vero Beach and back to deliver the painting.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND MORE OF YOUR WORK?

My most recent work is available for purchase on my website www.randeehooker.com. You can also email me at randeehooker@gmail.com to discuss custom work.
